Oviedo Strengthens its European Network at the Culture Next Conference in Poland

Oviedo is taking part in the 15th edition of the European Culture Next Conference, held from 15 to 17 October in Bielsko-Biała (Poland) under the theme “Culture, Art and Wellbeing – Best Practice in People’s Engagement”. This event brings together culture, wellbeing and mental health in cities that are committed to social transformation through art.
Antonia Blau, European Advisor for Oviedo’s 2031 European Capital of Culture bid, is actively participating in the conference. In Poland, she has met with representatives from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Jerez de la Frontera, who are also aspiring to the European Capital of Culture title in 2031. This exchange of experiences reflects the collaborative spirit that defines the Culture Next network.
The conference programme includes lectures, workshops and immersive experiences exploring how culture can have a direct impact on mental health—from artistic projects used as therapeutic tools to citizen participation strategies that combat loneliness and strengthen communities.
This approach also resonates in Spain. Recently, the Ministries of Health and Culture signed an agreement to integrate the arts into mental health policies. Among its measures are cultural prescription in primary care, the recognition of cultural spaces as therapeutic resources, and joint training programmes for health and culture professionals.
But it’s not all debates and roundtables. Participants have also had the chance to enjoy the traditional cuisine of Bielsko-Biała, with signature dishes such as goulash and potato pancakes. This culinary touch complements the conversations with moments of conviviality, bringing culture and wellbeing together through a universal language, food.

Why Culture Next Matters for Oviedo?
The Culture Next network brings together European cities that have been, are, or aspire to be European Capitals of Culture. Its mission is to foster cooperation between cities, share best practices, promote cultural innovation, and strengthen the role of culture as a driving force for urban development.
For Oviedo, participating in this forum means more than presenting its candidacy: it’s about becoming an active member of an international network that enhances visibility, builds alliances with other European cities and fosters shared learning.
Our presence in Bielsko-Biała reaffirms Oviedo’s commitment to a vision of culture that is connected to health, wellbeing, and a strong European dimension.
