Love is in the Air: a project to breathe, move and create collectively from Trubia

Oviedo’s candidacy to become European Capital of Culture 2031 continues bringing contemporary creation to neighbourhoods and local communities through LOVE is in the Air, a new community-based creative project that will take place in Trubia and its surrounding area over the coming months.

Led by dancer and choreographer Mónica García, the project explores movement, breathing and collective connection as tools for creation, coexistence and connection with the territory. The initiative is part of Puxa el Barrio. Arte que habita, the artistic mediation programme promoted by the candidacy to activate community centres and bring contemporary artistic practices closer to citizens.

The project is open to residents of Trubia and nearby areas, with no age limit and no previous experience in dance or performing arts required. “This is an intergenerational process. Everyone is invited to take part. Community participation is essential in order to build together a process connected to contemporary artistic practices”, explains Paula Mota Garcia, artistic co-director of the Oviedo 2031 candidacy.

The creative process will be developed in two stages: the first during June and the second in September and October. Through the body, movement and collective listening, the initiative aims to create spaces for encounter, cohesion and shared creation around the territory and human relationships.

The project also seeks to highlight cultural spaces such as the Teatro de Trubia. “Beyond collective creation and collaborative work, this initiative invites citizens to rediscover places that are true gems and especially inspiring for contemporary artistic practices”, says Zoe López Mediero, artistic co-director of the candidacy.

As a starting point, an open information session with Mónica García will take place on Wednesday 3 June from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm. The meeting will introduce the project and open a first space for participation for neighbours interested in joining the initiative.

“We want to get Trubia dancing. Contemporary dance is often still largely unknown, and I feel the need to approach it from a different perspective. LOVE is in the Air is an invitation to move, breathe and share”, explains Mónica García.

Through initiatives such as this one, Oviedo 2031 continues developing a local cultural strategy that understands artistic creation as a tool for participation, coexistence and social transformation.
