Asturias celebrates World Cider Day by highlighting cider culture as a symbol of community life
Asturias is celebrating World Cider Day this Thursday by showcasing one of its most distinctive cultural hallmarks: cider culture. Beyond the drink itself, the occasion offers an opportunity to explore the rich social and cultural universe that led Asturian Cider Culture to be recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
The international organization has highlighted the practices, knowledge and social relationships that revolve around cider and form an integral part of everyday life in Asturias. Apple orchards, cider mills, the art of pouring cider, gastronomy and the celebrations associated with this tradition represent a unique way of understanding community life and social coexistence.
Among the most representative spaces of this culture is the traditional chigre, a gathering place where different generations come together to share conversations, experiences and celebrations. According to its supporters, it plays a key role in strengthening social bonds and preserving customs that have been passed down for centuries.
Cider culture is also closely linked to the concept of Amabilidá, the guiding idea behind Oviedo’s bid to become European Capital of Culture 2031. This concept emphasizes the ability to live together, recognize others and create shared spaces where differences can meet and coexist.
Supporters of this vision point out that many of the values associated with cider culture are reflected in everyday gestures such as sharing a table, offering a culín of cider or welcoming newcomers. It is a way of relating to others based on hospitality and closeness, characteristics that continue to define Asturian society.
They also stress that cider making itself conveys a lesson that goes beyond the product. Fermentation requires time, patience and care, just as meaningful cultural transformations need time to mature, take root and become part of a shared heritage.
For all these reasons, cider culture is much more than a gastronomic tradition. It is a way of building relationships, caring for the territory and strengthening community life—values that Asturias celebrates on World Cider Day and projects beyond its borders.
