Bizet’s opera Carmen

An opera in four acts with music by Georges Bizet and a libretto by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy, based on the novel of the same name by Prosper Mérimée. Carmen premiered at the Opéra-Comique in Paris on 3 March 1875 and reached Oviedo’s Teatro Campoamor on 5 October 1894, becoming ever since one of the most popular and frequently performed titles in the operatic repertoire.

With its unmistakable blend of passion, fate and rebellion, and with instantly recognisable arias such as the Habanera and the Toreador Song, this masterpiece of opéra comique continues to captivate audiences through the strength of its characters and the vitality of its music, which combines popular and dramatic elements with outstanding theatrical effectiveness.
