Zarzuela: El barberillo de Lavapiés (The Little Barber of Lavapiés)

On Thursday, 26 February 2026, at 7:30 pm, audiences will have the opportunity to enjoy a three-act zarzuela with a libretto by Luis Mariano de Larra and music by Francisco Asenjo Barbieri, originally premiered at Madrid’s Teatro de la Zarzuela on 18 December 1874. The performance is presented in a production by Theater Basel (2025), offering a carefully crafted and contemporary staging of this classic work of the Spanish lyric repertoire.

The production is conducted by Óliver Díaz, with stage direction by Christof Loy. The artistic team also includes set design by Manuel La Casta, lighting design by Valerio Tiberi, costume design by Robby Duiveman and choreography by Javier Pérez.

The cast features Carmen Artaza as Paloma and David Oller as Lamparilla, alongside Cristina Toledo (Marquesita del Bierzo), Santiago Sánchez (Don Luis de Haro), Alejandro Baliñas (Don Juan de Peralta), Joselu López (Don Pedro) and Marcelino Echevarría as the guitarist.

The musical performance will be provided by Oviedo Filarmonía and the Capilla Polifónica “Ciudad de Oviedo” Choir, bringing to life one of the most celebrated works of the zarzuela tradition.
