The Mayor of Oviedo, Alfredo Canteli, met yesterday with the Mayor of Gijón, Carmen Moriyón, to seek the support of the neighboring city for Oviedo’s candidacy as European Capital of Culture in 2031. The response was very positive, making it clear that Gijón is “extending a hand” to this candidacy. This meeting marks the beginning of a series of visits that Canteli plans to make to various Asturian municipalities to gather support for this cultural initiative.

Upon his arrival at Gijón City Hall, Canteli stated: “We want to be the European Capital of Culture, and we openly discuss the integration of other municipalities because we believe that this title does not only involve Oviedo but all of Asturias. That is why we are here to speak with the Mayor.”

This visit to Gijón is the first of several that Canteli has planned for other Asturian municipalities, such as Avilés, Siero, Mieres, and Langreo, with the aim of consolidating a strong and representative candidacy for the entire region. The project already has the unanimous support of all political groups in Oviedo’s municipal corporation and the explicit backing of the Government of the Principality.
