Oviedo 2031 Bid takes centre stage on Oviedo Day at FIDMA

The Asturias International Trade Fair (FIDMA) celebrated Oviedo Day this Saturday with an institutional event in which the city’s bid for European Capital of Culture 2031 was the central theme. The gathering was attended by Mayor Alfredo Canteli, accompanied by members of the Municipal Corporation, Principality authorities, representatives of Asturian municipalities, and figures from the region’s business and cultural sectors.

Mayor Canteli described the bid as “a great collective challenge for Oviedo and for all of Asturias,” highlighting the importance of heritage, artistic talent, and the institutional unity achieved: “We need to work together to demonstrate that we are worthy of this title and seize the opportunity to project our culture towards Europe.”

The Mayor of Gijón, Carmen Moriyón, stressed that “what happens in Oviedo concerns all Asturians” and that the cultural title would benefit the entire region. In the same vein, the President of the Asturian Federation of Councils, Cecilia Pérez, recalled that this project “is a lever to strengthen collaboration between municipalities and generate new cultural and economic dynamics.”

Other speakers, such as the Vice President of the Gijón Chamber of Commerce, Pedro López, the Mayor of Langreo, Roberto García, the Minister of Culture, Vanessa Gutiérrez, and the President of the General Assembly of the Principality, Juan Cofiño, agreed that the bid represents a unique opportunity to boost Asturias’s economic, social, and cultural development, as well as to strengthen ties with Europe through culture as a driver of cohesion.

The event, held at Oviedo’s stand at FIDMA, reaffirmed the institutional, social, and civic commitment to Oviedo’s bid for European Capital of Culture 2031.
