Oviedo 2031 strengthens its artistic direction with two new co-directors
Oviedo’s bid to become European Capital of Culture 2031 is entering the decisive phase of the selection process with a reinforced structure. The team is introducing a new artistic co-direction formed by Paula Mota García and Zoe López, who will lead the design of the cultural programme in this final stage.
The announcement was made by the bid’s director, Rodolfo Sánchez, following several weeks of internal work aimed at strengthening the project’s organisation. This development comes after Oviedo reached the final stage of the selection process, alongside Cáceres, Granada and Las Palmas.
The current artistic director, Natalia Álvarez Simó, will remain involved in the project, although she will reduce her level of commitment due to professional obligations.
The appointment of Paula Mota García brings international experience to the project. The Portuguese cultural manager was part of the team that led Évora to become European Capital of Culture 2027 and had already been collaborating with Oviedo 2031 as an international advisor. Meanwhile, Zoe López steps up from her role as territorial coordinator to artistic co-director, strengthening the project’s connection with the Asturian territory.
The team is currently working on the administrative procedures required to formalise the new co-direction, which will lead the next eight months of work ahead of the final presentation before the international jury.
During the meeting where this reinforcement was announced, Rodolfo Sánchez thanked all team members for their work in the first phase and highlighted their commitment at this key moment for the bid.
