Oviedo promotes the transformation of La Vega through an international ideas competition
Oviedo takes a further step in the recovery of the former La Vega arms factory, a key site for the city’s cultural and urban development looking ahead to 2031.
The Local Government Board has approved the launch of an international ideas competition to define the future of this historic enclave and its integration into the urban fabric. The competition, with a total prize fund of €80,000, aims to attract proposals from leading architecture and urban planning studios.
The winning team will be responsible for drafting the final project, including urban planning regulations and the necessary instruments to transform La Vega into an open, accessible and well-connected space. The timeline foresees completion of this work by early 2027.
The intervention proposes a mixed-use model combining culture, innovation, economic activity, green areas and housing, with the aim of creating a new meeting space for citizens.
The project will also respect the site’s heritage value, including its proximity to Santullano and the historic routes that cross the area, reinforcing its integration into Oviedo’s urban and cultural landscape.
With this initiative, the city moves forward in the recovery of one of its most emblematic spaces, aligning its transformation with the values of sustainability, coexistence and access to culture that define Oviedo’s bid to become European Capital of Culture 2031.
