Saco + Radar + Cine a la luz de la luna
Oviedo’s film programming finds its main annual event in SACO – Contemporary Audiovisual Week of Oviedo. With over ten editions, SACO has turned cinema into a meeting point with other disciplines such as music, theatre, painting, literature, digital art, web series, video games, and virtual or augmented reality. Its European spirit is reflected in the consistent presence of artists and filmmakers from countries like France, Portugal, and the United Kingdom.
SACO takes place in various venues throughout the city, many of them iconic buildings such as the Museum of Fine Arts, the Archaeological Museum, or the Historic Building of the University of Oviedo, promoting dialogue between cinema, heritage, and sustainability. One of its most significant sections is aimed at children and young audiences, with a carefully curated selection of short films for ages 3 to 18, developed in collaboration with French festivals and institutions.
Throughout the year, the programming expands with RADAR, a series dedicated to contemporary cinema and retrospectives of major figures in world cinema. It maintains strong ties with film industries from countries such as Romania, France, Poland, and South Korea. Screenings are primarily held at the Teatro Filarmónica, but also extend to other parts of the municipality, bringing original-version cinema to diverse audiences free of charge.
In summer, cinema hits the streets with CINE A LA LUZ DE LA LUNA (“Cinema by Moonlight”), an open-air screening program that tours neighborhoods and villages across the region, offering a lineup for all ages and tastes. It’s a way to enjoy films under the stars, in community, and with free access.
