Oviedo continues to gather support in its bid to be recognized as the European Capital of Culture in 2031. The most recent to join this important project is the Archbishop of Oviedo, Jesús Sanz Montes, who expressed his support during a meeting with Mayor Alfredo Canteli. In the meeting, held at the Archbishopric offices, the prelate affirmed the Church’s commitment to this goal. “We gladly join this noble project,” said Sanz Montes, who also highlighted the historical and cultural significance of the city within the European Christian context.

The Cathedral of Oviedo, the Holy Chamber, the Primitive Way, and Pre-Romanesque art were cited as evidence of Oviedo’s role in shaping the Christian roots of Europe. “These milestones are part of a geography that tells a unique story, and the Church wants to contribute to ensuring that this legacy is recognized at the European level,” added the archbishop.
