The Museum of Fine Arts of Asturias presents its programme from February to June 2026
The Museum of Fine Arts of Asturias presented this morning its programme for the period from February to June 2026. The event featured interventions by the museum’s director, María López-Fanjul, as well as Antón García, Director General for Language Policy, and David Álvarez, Councillor for Culture of the Oviedo City Council, among others.
During her address, the museum director stressed that the aim of this new phase is not to increase visitor numbers indiscriminately, but to build a lasting relationship with audiences. “We are not concerned with growing in numbers, but with ensuring that visitors return and feel comfortable,” López-Fanjul stated.
The programme, which will run between February and June 2026, activates four strategic pillars: the internationalisation of the museum; a proactive approach to the entire region of Asturias from its base in Oviedo; strengthening the bond with the public through a contemporary, cross-disciplinary reading of the collections; and the implementation of audience development strategies across all areas of the institution.
Among the highlighted projects is the exhibition INTERCAMBIOS, which will be on view from 4 June to 1 November 2026 at the museum’s Oviedo venue. Curated by Dr Laura Baños, the exhibition proposes dialogues between historic and contemporary works from the museum’s collection, addressing key 21st-century issues such as globalisation, sustainability, migration and identity.
In terms of international outreach, the museum is launching the lecture series Asturias Global, featuring leading figures from the international museum scene, including Gabriele Finaldi, Director of the National Gallery in London; Amanda Dotseth, Director of the Meadows Museum in Dallas; and C. D. Dickerson, Chief Curator of Sculpture at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, among others.
The programme also includes The Museum of Fine Arts of (in) Asturias, a travelling initiative that will bring the museum to different parts of the region through open-air cinema screenings, alongside a broad range of educational activities, cultural mediation programmes, and accessibility and inclusion initiatives for audiences of all ages.
Through projects such as Tendiendo puentes, La memoria del espacio and Meeting Point, the Museum of Fine Arts of Asturias reinforces its commitment to the community and consolidates its role as a key cultural institution in the cultural life of Oviedo.
