The Princess of Asturias Awards
The Princess of Asturias Awards are a symbol of Oviedo’s commitment to science, culture, and humanistic values. Granted by the Princess of Asturias Foundation, a private non-profit institution, these awards have recognized the work of individuals and institutions around the world since 1981, across eight major categories: Arts, Literature, Social Sciences, Communication and Humanities, Scientific and Technical Research, International Cooperation, Concord, and Sports.
Each year, in October, Oviedo becomes an international cultural epicenter during the awards ceremony, presided over by Their Majesties the King and Queen of Spain and held in the iconic Teatro Campoamor. This event not only honors outstanding careers but also offers a space for reflection on the great challenges and advancements of our time.
Since 1996, the Foundation has also promoted a wide-ranging program of public cultural activities, designed to bring the stories, ideas, and contributions of the awardees closer to the public. Over 800 events and 260,000 participants in recent years speak to the reach of this initiative, which includes everything from school talks to expert panels and book clubs.
Oviedo embraces these awards with pride and passion. They are a celebration of knowledge, talent, and solidarity that connects Asturias with the world.
