First Selection Phase for European Capital of Culture 2031 Postponed to 9 March
The Ministry of Culture has announced that the first selection phase for the European Capital of Culture 2031 will now take place between 9 and 13 March, instead of the previously scheduled dates.
As a result, Oviedo will face the first stage of the selection process in March, alongside the other candidate cities: Burgos, Cáceres, Granada, Jerez, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Palma, Potries and Toledo.
Oviedo will present its candidacy to the selection panel on Wednesday, 11 March, while the decision on which cities advance to the next phase will be announced on Friday, 13 March.
The final title of European Capital of Culture 2031 will be awarded at the end of 2026.
Oviedo continues to prepare the defence of its cultural project, which is rooted in citizen participation, social cohesion and a strong European outlook, with the aim of positioning the city and the wider Asturian region on the European cultural map.
