Oviedo receives support from the General Assembly of the Principality of Asturias for the 2031 European Capital of Culture bid

The General Assembly of the Principality of Asturias has expressed its unanimous support for Oviedo’s candidacy as the European Capital of Culture in 2031. In an institutional statement, the parliamentary groups highlighted that this is a unique opportunity to position the city at the heart of the European cultural scene, promoting its heritage, identity, and creativity.
The initiative, backed by the regional government and the main town councils, aims to be a project of transformation and modernization, as well as to project Oviedo internationally. The goal is to reflect on the cultural situation of the city and all of Asturias, identifying strengths and weaknesses to promote an inclusive debate about the future of culture in the European context.
Additionally, it includes the development of a ten-year action plan to strengthen the cultural fabric of the community, turning culture into a driver of economic and social development, boosting tourism, and creating new opportunities.
The Assembly has called on citizens and institutions to join this exciting project, which seeks to position Oviedo and Asturias on the European cultural stage.
