Asturias’ cultural community bids farewell to Sergi Martí, co-founder of La Benéfica de Piloña

The cultural community of Asturias mourns the loss of Sergi Martí (Molins de Rei, 1969), one of the founders of La Benéfica de Piloña, who passed away at the age of 56 after several months of illness. The news has deeply affected the local and artistic community that for years has found in this space in Infiesto a place of gathering, creation, and shared celebration.

The artist Rodrigo Cuevas, one of the promoters of La Benéfica along with Sergi and Nacho Somovilla, highlighted his kindness and constant commitment, remembering him as a “piloñés by adoption and by love.”

From La Benéfica, a farewell message in Asturian has been shared, which also announces the cancellation of the Antroxu planned for next Saturday. The organization considers these days a time for reflection and shared memories, and as such, one of its most anticipated events will not take place.

However, the cultural space will keep its doors open to host activities organized by other associations and institutions, staying true to the idea of a shared and living space that Sergi always advocated for. Those who knew him remember his approachable, kind, and cheerful character, as well as his ability to build community.

Sergi moved to Asturias over three decades ago and made Piloña his home. From there, he helped establish a project that has transcended the local level, becoming a benchmark for community-driven culture in rural Asturias, blending tradition and innovation, celebration and critical thinking.

From the Oviedo 2031 European Capital of Culture bid, we extend our condolences to the family, friends, and community of La Benéfica de Piloña for the passing of Sergi Martí. His trajectory and the collective legacy he leaves in Asturias’ community culture have already become part of the cultural history of our region. Initiatives like La Benéfica show that culture is also a network, care, and a shared vision for the future.

There will be more Antroxos, because celebration is an essential part of the cultural identity of Asturias. Sergi’s legacy, his drive, and his way of building community will continue to live on in the cultural memory of Asturias.
