Declared a Festival of Tourist Interest of the Principality of Asturias, La Ascensión is a traditional celebration honouring rural life, dating back to at least the 16th century.

The city hosts artisan and local food markets in the Campo San Francisco, alongside parades of bagpipe bands, folk groups and live demonstrations of traditional crafts. The programme also features a livestock exhibition at El Asturcónand the Paisano and Paisana of the Year awards at the Auditorium.

Throughout the celebration, restaurants across the city offer the traditional Ascensión Menu, including seasonal vegetables, “carne gobernada” (braised beef) and cherry-based desserts.
