Avilés Gives Its Full Support to Oviedo’s Candidacy for European Capital of Culture 2031

The Mayor of Oviedo, Alfredo Canteli, has presented today, March 3rd, at the Avilés City Hall, the project for Oviedo’s candidacy as European Capital of Culture in 2031
The Mayor held a meeting with the Mayor of Avilés, Mariví Monteserín, to outline the key points and objectives of this initiative, emphasizing that “we must work with great seriousness and adapt to what Europe really wants.” Confident and hopeful, Canteli expressed his gratitude for Avilés’ support and called for “the collaboration of all municipalities in Asturias to achieve this goal.”
The Mayor of Avilés, Mariví Monteserín, added: “Oviedo has a well-thought-out approach in that they want to involve the rest of the cities and all of Asturias, including the Principality itself. This seems to me this is a solid project with a great chance of success under Europe’s criteria.” In her view, the three major cities of the Principality collectively hold “a significant amount of infrastructure, cultural investment, and cultural spending far above the average for cities of our size. We are here to help. We are not competing; we complement each other.”
